Ethnic Wedding DressesA Taste of World Culture
Ethnic wedding dresses display our own heritage which we can be proud of. Let's take a look at a few of these different gowns to discover the beauty and grace from different cultures around the world.
Only family members of the bride and groom can attend. It is usually held in a Shinto Temple and performed by a Shinto priest. During the most traditional Japanese weddings, the bride must be painted white from head to toe as a symbol of purity. Japanese ethnic wedding dresses consist of a long white kimono called a shiro-maku. The hair is also worn in an elaborate traditional style decorated with combs and other accessories. A hood or hat usually covers the head to signify that the bride will be a serene, submissive and patient wife.
Jewelry obviously highlights the look of the bride but the wedding dress is given a lot of emphasis. Every part of India manufactures its own particular style of wedding dress in terms of weaves, embroidery and fabric. The most expensive are the south silk gowns that are woven with pure gold. In fact, it has been said that if you had all those gold threads melted down on one of the most expensive gowns, you could come up with almost a kilo of real gold!
Now that's a dress worth keeping!
Chinese Wedding Dresses: They are usually red wedding gowns to symbolize luck but adorned with elaborate gold and silver designs. Contrary to the western culture of marrying on the weekend, Chinese couples will choose a day based on their lucky numbers which can be any day of the week.
Indonesian Wedding Dresses: Most of these dresses have long lacey sleeves and the bride will usually wear her hair in an ornate updo and traditional headpiece. Every wedding in Indonesia has a different ceremony based on a group culture and religion which is influenced by the families involved. Usually the parents of the bride have a greater say in the direction of the ceremonies, as they are the ones who will organize them. There are several ceremonies which may take place such as the bathing ceremony, the ceremony on the eve before the wedding, the engagement ceremony, the religious marriage ceremony and other ceremonies which follow the wedding celebration. Indonesian weddings are usually very large as guests often consist of both close friends and also acquaintances. If you are ever fortunate enough to be invited to an Indonesian
wedding, it would be considered rude to not attend the reception.
